LAMiNATE Talks

The spring Talks series covered a diverse range of LAMiNATE-related topics. It began with Panos Athanasopoulos discussing conceptual integration in bilingual memory, followed by Annick De Houwer's talk on supporting language diversity in schools. The first thematic block focused on reference tracking, with Josefin Lindgren and Jorrig Vogels exploring how model stories affect Swedish-speaking children's narrative skills, and Jennifer Arnold examining discourse-level language processing. The second thematic block delved into the neural foundations of language switching, featuring Christos Pliatsikas on bilingualism and neuroplasticity, and Roger Johansson on neurocognitive methods for studying temporal dynamics in switching between language systems. The series concluded with Marianne Gullberg and Jonas Granfeldt introducing the RJ Programme Transdisciplinary approaches to learning and multilingualism (TEAM).

We start again on 10 September with a talk by Tanja Kupisch and Ilaria Venagli on reading in L2 learners with and without dyslexia. The autumn will include one thematic session on foreign language anxiety, organised by Henriette Arndt, and one “TEAM theme” organised by participants in the RJ programme. The autumn series concludes with a presentation by Jeanine Treffers-Daller on 17 December.

Shut up and Write!

A small group of LAMiNATErs have been getting together online to “shut up and write” during the spring. Sessions were held weekly, on Fridays 13–15, and will resume on August 23. New participants are welcome to join at any time during the term for as many or as few sessions as they wish. Send an e-mail to Frida (frida.splendido@nordlund.lu.se) if you would like the Zoom link.

Grants and Awards

We are very pleased to announce that Professor Alastair Henry, professor of Language Education at the Centre for Languages and Literature, LAMiNATE member, and a PI in the RJ-funded research programme TEAM, has been honoured with the Distinguished Scholar Award by the International Association for the Psychology of Language Learning (IAPLL). The award was presented during the Psychology of Language Learning conference (PLL5) held in Madrid this past May. Congratulations, Professor Henry!

More good news: Marianne Gullberg, Jonas Granfeldt, and Alastair Henry have successfully secured funding from the prestigious LMK Foundation. This generous grant will support the creation of a second LAMiNATE-related postdoctoral position. The postdoctoral position will be advertised shortly. Stay tuned!

LAMiNATE at EuroSLA

The 33rd edition of EuroSLA will be hosted by Université de Montpellier 3-6 July 2024 and we know that many of you will be there. If you are presenting, let us know by sending an email to Frida.Splendido@nordlund.lu.se. We want to give you a shoutout on "the platform formerly known as Twitter" and direct attendees your way. Let's make a splash at EuroSLA together!

LAMiNATE Membership

Each LAMiNATE member’s contribution to the platform is important. Here’s a small reminder of what you can do:
