LAMiNATE Talks

With a stimulating spring series behind us – thank you to all who presented! – we look forward to the LAMiNATE Talks autumn series. We start again on 23 September with a talk by Kirill Elin (Lund University) entitled Mastering the Flanker: The Impact of Multilingualism. The autumn will include one thematic session on quantitative data analysis, organised by Henriette Arndt. The autumn series concludes with a presentation by Kara Morgan-Short (University of Illinois Chicago) on individual differences in neurocognitive processing. Download the programme and mark your calendars!

New local LAMiNATErs

This year, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming two new LAMiNATErs to Lund University: Tanja Kupisch and Kirill Elin.

Tanja Kupisch, professor of Linguistics. She works on bilingual child and adult language acquisition, trilingualism in childhood and adulthood, heritage language acquisition and bilectal acquisition as well as the links between bilingualism and language policies and between bilingualism and diachronic change.

Kirill Elin, postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Psychology. His previous research mainly focused on understanding how bi/multilingualism contributes to neurocognitive adaptations across the lifespan. Kirill has joined LU as main researcher in the RJ programme TEAM’s Project 5 on language switching.

Awards

The article “Multilingualism and persistence in multiple language learning” by LAMiNATE's Alastair Henry has received the 2023 Modern Language Journal (MLJ) Research Article Award, and the 2025 American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) Research Article Award. Read more about the awards on our news page.

Ongoing projects

We wanted to showcase the breadth and diversity of the ongoing research conducted by LAMiNATE members. So we collected project titles associated with members from LU’s research database LUCRIS. The image below shows a selection of diverse and dynamic research initiatives under the LAMiNATE umbrella . As you can see, projects span a wide range of themes, including language learning and processing, embodied bilingualism, pronunciation training, sign language, multilingualism, and the development of innovative digital tools such as the LANG-TRACK-APP and OVA for video analysis. Efforts also focus on supporting children with developmental language disorders, speech fluency, and the acquisition of second and foreign languages. Although the image highlights many active areas of exploration, it is only a selection. The breadth is therefore even greater than what the image shows.

For the full list of projects, go to our LUCRIS page! And don't forget to tag your own projects that fall under the LAMiNATE umbrella.

LAMiNATE at EuroSLA

The 33rd edition of EuroSLA will be hosted by the Arctic University of Norway 26–28 July 2025 (i.e. next week) and we know that many of you will be there. If you are presenting, let us know by sending an email to Frida.Splendido@nordlund.lu.se. We want to make a pre-conference LinkedIn post and direct attendees your way.

LAMiNATE Membership

Each LAMiNATE member’s contribution to the platform is important. Here’s a small reminder of what you can do:

  • actively participate in our activities, such as the LAMiNATE Talks series.
  • use the LAMiNATE symbol (download here) on slides when presenting on topics relevant to LAMiNATE at conferences and outreach events.
  • invite colleagues/students to join the Talks series.
  • link your research output and activities to LAMiNATE in LUCRIS, when these are clearly related to the topics of language acquistion, multilingualism and language teaching. LAMiNATE should automatically appear under "contributors and affiliations"; if not, you can click on "add organisational unit". Do not forget to untick any publication or activity unrelated to LAMiNATE.
  • propose and organise a theme for the LAMiNATE Talks with speakers to invite.
  • let us know when you have a new publication so that we can add it to the news page.
